Growing up, I was taught by my grandmother that women should be seen and not heard. But as an adult that just seemed powerless to me.

There is a healing strength in women, especially in the quiet ones.

In "Northern Lights", we will create the calming strength of a female portrait that provokes a magical imagery reflecting on the push and pull of light and dark.

Who is this class for:

  • If you’re ready for your artwork to have a voice by creaing striking imagery that shouts, See Me!

  • It’s not just about painting. Adding mix media to your artwork will guide you in developing your design, capturing the viewers attention, and inspire you to create when your creative boredom sets in.

  • This class is for beginner and advanced. If you are new at drawing faces, I provide a face template to help.

In this four part session, we start by prepping our panel, adding collage, and drawing the female portrait. (Face template provided.) Stains and inks are painted on as our first layer of highlight and shadow. Additional layers of white, cream, orange, teal, and sepia are built upon to create richness and depth.

We we develop design elements in her clothing and hair as well as create a black background without using black. We will finish by adding stencil work that will help blend the foreground with background.

She is mystical with her towering hair as she is surrounded in night time flora and movement.
